SparkSavings belongs to the SparkPeople group of internet applications. SparkPeople’s mission is to provide free online weight loss and better living resources, building a community of people with a desire to improve and/or maintain their standard of living. SparkPeople is based out of Cincinnati, Ohio and was founded in 2000. The family of applications includes many popular sites such as SparkTeens, BabyFit, SparkRecipes, and DailySpark.
Most finance related websites users come across are geared towards businesses and companies. There are not quite as many prominent sites that focus on the average person’s spending habits. SparkSavings brings users a list of tools that can help them manage their money and learn how to spend it better. This can lead to better living and a healthier lifestyle overall. Many of the SparkPeople applications focus on physical health, however SparkSavings is intended to help users take care of their financial health. The tools are easy to use so that even a non-investor can quickly learn how to build a budget that works and manage it while monitoring spending and savings.
The SparkSavings website may feel a little busy to a new user. The site includes many colorful images of happy people along with various headers and tools needed to navigate. It is by far not nearly as cluttered as other websites, but the presents of a large banner ad across the top of the homepage seems to take away from the overall quality of the site design. The actual SparkSavings logo is much smaller than the advertisement that eclipses it. Other than that, each tool is easy to use and made for the average person rather than the financial guru.
A visitor can become a SparkSavings member by clicking on the brown-gold “Join Now!” button found along the right hand side of the homepage. This takes the user to the registration form which requests an email address, username, password, country location, zip code, date of birth, gender and an additional question that asks if the user is pregnant or breastfeeding. Users who already have a SparkPeople account can login using that information even if it is their first time visiting SparkSavings. The right hand column includes two check boxes that are automatically selected to sign the user up for newsletters. These must be manually unchecked to opt out.
The SparkPeople line of applications is intended to provide free assistance to the user community, and SparkSavings is no different. Anyone can create an account without paying anything for doing so. The site does not require a subscription fee and there are no premium paid accounts offered at this time. By taking a few minutes to create an account, users can access all features available on SparkSavings.
Anyone can benefit from using SparkSavings. The site is interesting for those who are still learning how to manage their personal finances. Young individuals, couples and families can create a budget and monitor spending habits as well as money saved through the site.
